WPTV-TV, The E.W. Scripps NBC station in beautiful and sunny West Palm Beach, Florida is seeking an aggressive and innovative News Director to lead our team of talented and experienced journalists.
At WPTV, it starts with listening. It's the foundation of what we do every day, inside the station and in our communities. We're looking for a news leader who understands the importance of listening and can execute journalism at the highest level. You'll step into a newsroom with a team of talented, experienced journalists who spend every day listening, enterprising stories, and helping our neighbors find real solutions. That begins with Let's Hear It, our listening initiative that drives engagement with WPTV and provides a direct connection to our communities. It continues with our investigative team, tackling complex issues and challenging authority. And it means listening to our entire newsroom, being open to regular feedback, and helping the team grow their careers.
You'll work with other members of the leadership team to build upon our success as the most trusted news brand across the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast, on every platform.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
• Work with the station leadership team to foster our brand across every platform.
• Execute and grow our listening initiatives internally and externally.
• Work with the GM, CSD, Director of Digital Media, and news leaders to build upon our strategic plans for audience growth.
• Communicate a compelling and inspired vision consistent with company strategy.
• Analyze and respond to trends affecting the industry and DMA.
• Work with the leadership of the Gray-owned Fox station to execute news strategies as part of our partnership.
• Develop and control the annual budget to comply with station guidelines.
• Build and maintain key relationships to foster a positive news image within the community.
• Monitor all on-air and online product for compliance to Federal, State and local laws as well as First & Fourteenth Amendments.
• Work closely with other members of station management team to develop and attain departmental and station goals.
• Embrace technology changes and work with the company and local leadership to implement new programs.
• Supervise and provide regular feedback and quarterly performance appraisals for direct reports.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
• At least 5-years or more of News Management experience is required.
• Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication or related field preferred.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING:
• Demonstrated ability to track and select trending news stories.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Ability to work in a rapid, fast-paced environment.
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays.
• Knowledge and demonstration of editorial judgment, journalistic ethics and libel laws.
• Ability to create tactics and strategies to increase demo performance in key target areas for multiple platforms.
• Have working knowledge of federal, state and local laws impacting operations.
• Advanced oral and written communication skills.
• Effective in a variety of formal presentation settings both inside and outside the organization.
• Proven and effective leadership skills; fosters open dialogue, empowers others, addresses conflict quickly and directly.
